The Opportunity
Eastman, a global leader in specialty materials, developed a cutting-edge polyester renewal technology that transforms hard-to-recycle plastic waste into high-quality, virgin-like material. This innovation promises to reshape how we approach sustainability. To expand their impact, Eastman sought a location for its second full-scale molecular recycling facility—a critical project in the circular economy. SDG was brought on board to identify the ideal site, with key criteria including community support for recycling initiatives, access to renewable energy, proximity to feedstock sources, and optimal logistics.
The Challenge
One of the core goals of the project was decarbonization—a key element for success in today’s circular economy. This meant finding sites that offered opportunities for carbon sequestration, low-carbon steam, and renewable energy access. SDG had to consider locations with strong industrial infrastructure that could support Eastman’s ambitious sustainability targets. Equally important was the need for a reliable feedstock supply, with priority given to areas with established aggressive recycling programs and access to post-industrial feedstock.
The Solution
SDG collaborated with Eastman to develop a robust decision matrix to filter potential sites across a wide search area—spanning the 23 U.S. states with advanced recycling legislation. The team focused on regions with favorable long-term operational conditions, emphasizing pathways for decarbonization, low-carbon electricity, and supply chain efficiency. After a rigorous evaluation of nearly 100 greenfield and co-location options, Longview, Texas emerged as the ideal location. Longview met the technical and logistical needs, and offered strong community backing for recycling and sustainability initiatives.
